GENE HARDY
Founder and Managing Director
Gene counts himself as one of the luckiest men alive. Born and bred in Margaret River, his childhood was spent out in the bush or on the beach, chasing fish, or waves, or his three brothers. A natural waterman, Gene started surfing competitively and eventually continued to travel the world as a surf journalist. He developed environmental, interpretive and team building programs in both Australia and the UK. And worked for a number of conservation agencies and NGOs. Gene is the Vice-President of the Friends of the Cape to Cape Track, sat on the Board for the Margaret River region’s tourism association, and the National Board for coastal conservation group Surfrider Foundation. Surfing alongside him most days are his wife Sunny and their girls Willow and Olive. Gene started Cape To Cape Explorer Tours in 2010 to share the magic of Margaret River with visitors.”
JAMES HARTLEY
Schools Coordinator / Guide
James moved to the South-West and instantly fell in love with the rugged beauty and incredible scenery here. Margaret River is now home amid the wild seas, magical forests and ancient landscapes which “sing to my heart and feed my soul”, says James. He has a background in teaching, facilitated youth expeditions across the globe including to Nepal and Uganda, and worked in schools in the UK and internationally. Now, his role is to engage local, interstate and international schools in camps that immerse students in our pristine and rugged environment. In doing so, he helps foster a love of place and nature, developing a sense of belonging and ecological responsibility that students can take away with them to “ripple out to communities far and wide”

Our community & Social Responsibility
Cape to Cape Explorer Tours established their Cape to Cape track hiking operations in 2010. During this time, we have been building on our relationships within the community by providing local employment opportunities, partnership programs, volunteering with non-profit organisations and engaging with our local Wardandi custodians. All of this enhances your experience with us through the opportunity for your community to experience engagement with one of our community engagement programs. A Welcome to Country from an indigenous elder is highly recommended when commencing a Cape to Cape experience. You will be walking in the footsteps of a culture with over 50,000 years connection to this land.
Our Environment Charter
Cape to Cape Explorer Tours seek opportunities to partner with local non-profit organisations. Many of these organisations assist with championing programs that establish ecological rejuvenation and environmental protection of the coast, marine life and bushlands. Your school can be involved in this important work by participating in Beach clean ups, tree planting, revegetation and dune stabilisations, ecological surveys and more.
Testimonials
As a Mercedes College staff member, Mother & Daughter Camp organiser and a parent of the College, I am always looking for something different for our mums and daughters to experience on Camp. It was by chance and great luck I found Surfpoint and Cape to Cape Explorer Tours! After liaising and discussing our specific needs for camp, I was very pleased to see that they were more than willing to accommodate our camp with whatever we needed to ensure it's success. The professionalism, friendliness and enthusiasm of the Cape to Cape Explorer Tours staff was amazing and made our mums and daughters feel comfortable, safe and keen to take on anything activity and challenge thrown at them.
- Jackie, Mercedes College Parent Liaison & Camp Coordinator
“I can't really imagine any part of the trip that could have been done better. From the moment they met us at Perth Airport to the very end when they dropped us at Perth Airport everything went super smoothly. Everything was five-star, unbeatable service, unbeatable experience. Highly recommended.”
- Lazlo Varro, Chinese International School
We held our second Adventure Camp with Cape To Cape Explorer Tours and we could not be happier with how amazing this camp was. Working with Cape To Cape Explorer Tours to run this camp, enables us to provide extraordinary activities to our young people. We had 4 days of kayaking, surfing, caving and hiking the beautiful Cape To Cape track. The Cape To Cape Explorer Tours staff are so knowledgeable, incredibly skilled and it was so clear that they truly cared about our young people and what they were getting out of the camp. We absolutely can’t wait for our next time down in the South West with you guys!
- Jess Crute, Programs Officer - CanTeen 2019
The team at Cape to Cape are always willing to work together with us to structure walks that will provide optimal educational experience, based on the requests of individual teachers. Focus areas are always changing, to meet the growing needs of the children, and the adaptability and positive engagement of the Cape to Cape staff is duly noted and greatly appreciated. Last minute changes to suit the weather or student needs are embraced positively and an open and responsive orientation to shared learning, on an adult level alongside the children, provides powerful role-modelling. Our students admire and respect the guides and are subsequently motivated to keenly engage, observe and learn when on Country.
